The objects of the research are: 1) To develop a vision system to be applied at the testing facilities available at the NSSMC (Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation – Japan), aimed at monitoring rolling contact fatigue tests. A similar system was developed for the test bench available at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering of the University of Brescia (DIMI): this system is able to evaluate the evolution of surface damage in disc-shaped specimens under rolling and sliding contact. Starting from this experience, a system dedicated to the specific requirements of the NSSMC test bench will be realized. 2) To evaluate the RCF properties of wheel steels provided by NSSMC. The tests will be carried out by means of the testing facilities available at the RCLab of the DIMI, including the new systems of measurement, monitoring and image acquisition. In particular, the effect of alternated dry and wet contact cycles will be evaluated.
